The most fast and reliable way to get form one part of the city to another with predictable time is metro.

In Russia Moscow Metro is the biggest one. Metro of Saint Petersburg is on the second place.  In Moscow metro there is a very big drawback in absence of information in English. All voice announces and practically all information boards are in Russia language.  That’s why you need a little lead-up before you can use metro without any doubts.

Moscow metro operates from 5:30 AM to 01:00 AM.

In Moscow metro there are different types of tickets. About most useful type of tickets for tourists I will tell further. But very important notice –  cost of ticket is independent on the length of your ride. Ones you entered metro you can go at any direction with one cost.

All tickets in metro are contactless (plastic cards).

In my view the most useful tickets for tourists are:

Tickets with trip limits also called Edinyi ( can be translated like Unified). Rides on this ticket can also be used in buses, trams, trolleybuses and monorail.

1 Ride – 50 Rub (~0,9$). Must be used in five days from purchase moment. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices and automated ticket terminals.

2 Rides – 100 Rub (~1,9$). Must be used in five days from purchase moment. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices and automated ticket terminals.

5 Rides – 180 Rub (~3$). Must be used in 90 days from purchase moment. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices.

11 Rides – 360 Rub (~6$). Must be used in 90 days from purchase moment. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices.

Tickets without trip limits also called Edinyi ( can be translated like Unified). Rides on this ticket can also be used in buses, trams, trolleybuses and monorail.

1 day – 210 (~3,5$). Time is counted from first usage. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices.

3 day – 400 (~6,5$). Time is counted from first usage. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices.

7 day – 800 (~13$). Time is counted from first usage. This kind of ticket can be bought in ticket offices.

Tickets for 1, 2 and 5 (usually terminals have only two options, so some of them sell tickets for 1 and 2 rides and other for 1 and 5 rides) rides you can buy through ticket terminals. Terminals have menu in English they can give you change some terminals accepts credit cards. Usage of such terminal looks similar all over the world especially if their menu is translated in English.
